But at this year’s iHeart Radio Z100’s Jingle Ball, the actress walked the carpet in an outfit fully inspired by Y2K, and not everyone is loving it. At the event, Holmes wore a dark blue strapless Tove minidress over bootcut jeans with a cutoff hem and black athletic sneakers. It was a strange combination, to say the least, and definitely felt like it was taken straight out of the early 2000s. Dave Kotinsky/Getty Images for iHeartRadio People on the internet had something to say about the dress-over-jeans look, with many demanding that the trend stays in the past. One person on Twitter wrote, “this trend reared its ugly head years ago and honestly how dare Katie Holmes have the audacity to try to bring it back.” Others defended the actress for her daring look, with one woman highlighting past looks that showcased Holmes’ fashion sense and saying, “I feel like people don’t realize that Katie Holmes has BEEN a fashion girly. She knows what she’s doing!” Another person supported the idea that Holmes has had an eye for fashion in the past, but they just couldn’t get behind the 2000s throwback look, writing, “I actually don’t have a witty tweet for this, I’m just very disturbed. Like this CAN’T BE the Katie Holmes who was serving in a knit Khaite sweater and bralette just two summers ago…” A Twitter user warned others, “Y’all gotta stop posting that Katie Holmes outfit cause the more I see it the more I’m here for it,” hinting that Holmes’ attempt to bring the trend back might actually be working. Another user said something similar, writing, “I refuse to revisit the dress-over-jeans abomination. Get that picture of Katie Holmes away from me.” Some people had to politely excuse themselves from the debate, as they had their own experiences with bad fashion trends to contend with. One person posted this extremely relatable tweet: “I unfortunately cannot comment on the Katie Holmes dress top + jeans combo because I too lived through the early 00’s and made decisions I regret.” So far, the jury’s still out on whether or not the dress-over-jeans trend will make a comeback in 2023, but Holmes’ look really got people talking.
