But that’s OK: The very American Emily is nothing but optimistic, and she embraces her own personal style, eventually winning over Pierre and others. For viewers, even though most of us would probably never choose her outfits, or could ever afford her designer pieces (come to think of it, Emily couldn’t really afford them either!), it’s super fun to watch—whether she’s mixing crazy patterns, donning bucket hats and berets or going for on-the-nose Paris references like a top displaying the Eiffel Tower or a bag emblazoned with the Mona Lisa. So where is Emily’s fashion headed in Season 2? “Emily still loves colors, prints, textures, and shapes this season, but she’s a little bit more settled in who she is here in Paris,” Collins says in a Netflix press interview. “There is an elevated, slightly Parisian flare about her now, influenced by old French cinema and her new friends. We’ve incorporated more purples, violets, yellows, chartreuses—bold colors, but nothing too overwhelming.” Costume designers Patricia Field (who also worked on Sex and the City) and Marylin Fitoussi take Emily’s style to the next level in Season 2. “My motto, for this season and the last, has always been, ‘Too much good taste is boring,’” Fitoussi says. “So if people thought Season 1 was a little much, a little flashy, then Season 2 will be more so.” Plus, Fitoussi didn’t want Emily to lose her unique fashion sensibility. “I didn’t want Emily to get too chic in Season 2. For me, Emily being too chic or too French would have meant that she’d given in, that her personality was no longer as strong,” she explains. “We’re sticking to her very eclectic, very colorful style, with the prints that are absolutely everything I love.” And she doesn’t think Emily is ringarde at all—no matter if you love it or hate it. “I find her outfits the opposite of ringarde, they’re very special,” she insists. “They may hurt your eyes, they may not appeal, but they leave no one indifferent.” Most of all, Field says Emily’s looks are what she calls “happy clothes” that make viewers feel good. “People like color and need color these days,” she says. “When we aired episode 1, I heard over and over again that it was so much fun to watch Emily in Paris during the pandemic, and that it helped lift peoples’ spirits.
